Mind wants to get three main points across to all prospective parliamentary candidates in the run up to the general election.

While some candidates will be familiar with mental health issues, others will be new to the area. Whatever their level of knowledge and interest, we need to make sure that all candidates understand the following:

  1. Mental health is a public health issue
  2. Tackling stigma and discrimination must be a priority
  3. Everyone should have access to quality services

Please support these aims, follow the below link below to read more about these Key issues and how you can help make sure all the candidates understand the issues faced.

Demonising “Obesity”…is this the Best Solution?

“Political Sound Bites?” …or just Utter Tripe!
Tripe

Tripe

Forgive me but I am getting more than a little sick and tired of those naive politicians spouting “political sound bites” and attacking those individuals who have weight issues, especially Obesity.

Warning before any more politicians jump on the band wagon with statements that infer that the only reason for this health issue is the individuals fault, i.e. eating too much, the wrong food, not exercising etc, this may well be the case in a large proportion of cases or at a major contributing factor, but who chooses to be labelled as a fatty?

However I know from personal experience that this isn’t the full story and nor are all the direct causes known or yet still fully understood. I gained 35kg in 3 years with depression later to discover I had Bipolar II Disorder which answered many past issues as well as the more recent events.

There are many reasons why a person can be overweight or obese other than by as a result of their personal lifestyle choices. Some examples of underlying causes for people being overweight or obese:-

Dear MP

Thank you for your re-assuring letter in response to my communication to your colleague *** ******** MP.

Please be assured I did send the same correspondence he received also directly to you as my local MP.

To be clear about my earlier correspondence my intention was to raise the broader issues by using my personal situation as an example only and I was not asking in this instance for direct intervention on my behalf.

I thought I had made it clear in my letter (more…)

Bipolar Disorder is “NOT just a Psychological Disorder FACT!”

March 27, 2010

Bipolar Disorder is “NOT just a Psychological Disorder FACT!”FACT!

A recent case provides considerable significance in regards Bipolar Disorder in the USA below as excerpted from Equilibrium The Bipolar Foundation website provides incontrovertible evidence from various areas of research that bipolar disorder is not ‘merely’ a ‘psychological disorder, though this case doesn’t directly affect UK law it does provide the method and tools in which a case could be won in the UK in regards employment and insurance discrimination on the same or similar grounds.

The Case: Fitts v. Fannie Mae[1]

Scales of Justice

Scales of Justice

The ruling by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia involves an employee of a major mortgage company who developed bipolar disorder and whose employee disability insurance provider stopped paying disability benefits after 24 months on the grounds of bipolar disorder being a ‘mental illness’. The policy provided cover until the age of 65 for physical disability. Ms. Fitts had worked for the company for 13 years before she was first diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1995. The employee Ms. Jane Fitts, successfully brought a case against both the employer and the insurer arguing that bipolar disorder did not clearly fall in the category “mental, emotional or nervous diseases or disorders of any type”. The court awarded “prejudgment interest on all sums due her and the costs of this action “.
